Compassionate and non-judgmental were just two of the qualities noted about Joan Berkvens by the donor who nominated her as an Angel in Action. Joan is a Health Services Manager at the Veterans’ Memorial Building where she oversees the 50 Veteran unit of 5 Garrison. She has been working at the VMB for over ten years and prior to that, she was a RN as well as Health Services Manager at the Rehabilitation Centre.
Joan, who was pleasantly surprised when presented with her Angel in Action pin, said “it is really nice to be recognized. I really enjoy geriatric nursing because it gives me the opportunity to utilize my nursing skills and assist others.”
Elsie Rolls, director, Veterans’ Services, described Joan as a “very kind and caring individual, dedicated to the wellbeing of all those she serves. Her support to staff is outstanding, and she brings a sense of humour, positive attitude, energy, and flair for organizing each day she comes to work.”
