Angel in Action Nursing Group 5V Garrison East
Ross Bennicke, resident at Veterans’ Memorial Building (VMB), believes he has many angels on his side helping make his life a little easier. And as a sign of appreciation, Ross honoured the entire nursing group of 5V Garrison East at VMB as Angels in Action, a recognition program through the QEII Foundation.

“I have been a resident at VMB for two years and the entire staff of 5V Garrison East are like family to me. There is no way I could recognize only one staff member because they all treat me so well,” emphasized Ross. Angel in Action Group Pinning

The Angels in Action program allows someone to nominate their Angel by making a donation to the QEII Foundation to support health care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. In turn, the Foundation organizes a surprise gathering where the nominated Angel is presented with their pin.

A total of 24 individuals of 5V Garrison East at VMB were honoured as a result of Ross’ nomination. This group includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, personal support workers, and the unit aid. The staff who were present for the surprise pinning were shocked but extremely touched by Ross’ nomination - many of them giving Ross a big hug following the pinning, clearly showing the family-like relationship.

“The nursing group does all they can to help facilitate and maintain Ross’ independence,” said Health Services Manager Joan Berkvens. “Ross is always so appreciative of the staff’s acceptance, non-judgmental support, and of course, their open ears for a good story!”
